Welcome to Nerd vs Nerd, your friendly neighborhood podcast that discusses nerd culture and media through the lens of politics and identity! We're friends IRL who bond over a shared love of nerd stuff and occasionally brawl over different socio-political perspectives and movie-snack preferences.
If you consume Vox's explainers as voraciously as trade paperbacks, this is the podcast for you! If you've ever complained about social justice warriors or said, "why can't you just shut up and enjoy the show/movie/book," then this is probably NOT the podcast for you. Join us as we scratch beneath the surface of our favorite stories and offer critical counter-narratives. Thanks for listening!
I've been a nerd my entire life. My dad's favorite book was The Sword of Shannara and he recorded the entire series of Star Trek: The Next Generation on video cassette as it was airing, so that's where I come from. I love comic books, sci-fi and fantasy novels, TV shows, and movies; tabletop games particularly Magic the Gathering and various hobby board games; computers; and any number of other interests. Even non traditionally nerd activities, I approach with a nerd mindset.
When I was a kid I was a standard-issue bookish nerd: I went to science camp, I was on the math team, I read literally everything I could get my hands on, and my dream school was MIT. I grew up loving books, TV shows and movies, but I was never exposed to comics, sci-fi or tabletop games. As an adult, I feel so lucky to have found my way into a comic book store and nerd culture more broadly. In particular, "Afrofuturism" and the world of black sci-fi and fantasy gives expression to a lifetime of effusive daydreaming.
